Center for Legal Aid – Voice in Bulgaria (CLA) is seeking a

Communications Officer


DURATION:12 months with possibility of extension (contingent on funding)


WORK HOURS: 3 work days per week


LOCATION: Office of the CLA in the central part of Sofia


REMUNERATION: BGN 1095/month before taxes


Center for Legal Aid – Voice in Bulgaria (CLA) is an independent community organization founded in 2009, with the mission to promote the rights of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants on the territory of Bulgaria through legal aid and advocacy. As part of completing the Project "Protecting migrants with precarious status: decreasing the use of detention and applying community-based alternatives", funded by the European Programme for Integration and Migration (EPIM) and implemented in partnership with Bulgarian Lawyers for Human Rights (BLHR), we are seeking a Communications Officer to join our small team and perform the following tasks:


Under the supervision of the Advocacy Officer, the Communications Officer will:

  • Monitor current events and trends in relation to migration, detention, regularization and other related themes in Bulgaria and the region, to identify emerging issues and propose topics for research and publication on DETAINED website (www.detainedinbg.com) and/or other media outlets;
  • Write content in the form of articles, analyses and other texts and/or translations for DETAINED website; prepare country-of-origin information notes; update the social media pages of the CLA;
  • Liaise with reporters, journalists and photojournalists for the production of stories to publish on the website and/or other media, in discussion with and under the guidance of the Advocacy Officer;
  • Initiate media appearances and/or handle media requests related to the project activities and coordinate the participation of experts from the CLA or other organizations in interviews, broadcasts, etc.; monitor and document media coverage/appearances;
  • Liaise with third-party suppliers in connection with communications products of the Project (websites, brochures, etc.) and ensure quality and timely delivery, contracting and billing;
  • Take part in the implementation of the CLA fundraising and sustainability strategy, including creating crowd-funding campaigns and organizing fundraising events;

Required Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years or more of related experience, such as communications or and/or social media officer at an NGO, or as journalist working on related themes (migration, social issues), or similar;
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Bulgarian and ability to conduct research and prepare articles, presentations, letters, etc. in both languages;
  • Interest in and/or knowledge of refugee and migration issues, and desire to advocate for migrant rights, with a focus on migrants in detention or irregular situation;

Not required, but it would be a bonus if the candidate has:

  • Experience and technical knowledge of maintaining/updating websites;
  • Experience in data-based and/or investigative journalism;
  • International experience: educational and/or professional;

·Graphic design and/or photography skills;

  • Experience and skills in conducting fundraising activities, such as organizing events, crowd-funding campaigns, etc.;
  • Basic understanding of Bulgarian and EU legislative frameworks as they relate to refugees and migrants.
