The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC) is looking to hire practicing Bulgarian lawyers (including in-house counsel) with a strong interest in human rights.

BHC is the largest and oldest civil human rights organisation in Bulgaria. It focuses on monitoring the human rights situation in the country and protecting human rights through advocacy and strategic litigation.

In pursuit of these objectives, the organisation carries out visits to closed institutions; prepares reports for national and international institutions and organisations; provides opinions on draft legislation, in interpretative and constitutional cases, as a third party in cases before the European Court of Human Rights and in the implementation of judgments, as well as before other international organisations; provides advice and free legal assistance in strategically selected cases.

Your work will involve:
  • appearing at court hearings or public hearings before administrative bodies;
  • preparing court papers and making case reports;
  •  supporting the work of the organisation’s lawyers;
  • working with clients and individuals seeking legal assistance;
  • carrying out various studies on legal topics;
  • monitoring the legislative process;
  • researching media coverage of significant public events or statements by officials;
  • organising documents, including in electronic form via Google Drive;
  • working on European and other projects;
  • other ongoing tasks.

We are looking for candidates who meet the following conditions:
  • are certified as a practitioner (in-house lawyer or registered in a bar association);
  • has experience in representing parties in litigation;
  • has a strong interest in human rights and sensitivity to the issues of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and communities;
  • has a high level of computer literacy related to working with files, word processing (office suite), legal information software, ECtHR and ECJ websites;
  • analytical thinking, good organisational skills, initiative and communication skills;
  • be responsible for commitments and able to meet deadlines;
  • be fluent in English and/or French (at least B2 level according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages).
